City Council approves Green Line route

On Tuesday, June 16, City Council approved Administration’s Green Line recommendation on the updated Stage 1 alignment along with changes to construction staging.

In addition to approving the alignment, Council approved a new construction staging strategy.  Administration’s recommendations reflect many thoughtful conversations since the June 1st Green Line Committee meeting with Council and stakeholders and balance the commitment to move forward with Stage 1, with the desire for greater certainty around managing risks.

Green Line Stage 1 will be constructed in three segments:

  • Segment 1: Elbow River to Shepard
  • Segment 2A: 2 Avenue SW station to Elbow River
  • Segment 2B: 16 Avenue N to north of 2 Avenue SW station

Segment 1 of the Green Line is shovel ready. The procurement process will move forward with the Request for Qualifications shortlisted proponents to be announced in June 2020, and the Request for Proposal to be issued no later than July 24, 2020. Given Segment 1 will be delivered as a design build finance project, the proponent teams will be bidding on the project starting on July 24, 2020 however, the detailed design and construction will begin in 2021.

Stage 1 builds the core of the Green Line long-term vision and will enable future incremental expansion as funding is available to realize the full benefits of the rapid transit network. High quality transit, like LRT, is a necessity for cities to grow, be attractive to entrepreneurs and a talented workforce, and to be competitive economic centres locally and internationally. Green Line is planned for long-term city shaping and spurring redevelopment and investment opportunities in Calgary and will be an important part of the city’s recovery generating 20,000 jobs.

NOTICE: Truck Detour in Ramsay: 21-23 Ave SE, UPDATED: TO JULY 28!

June 16th, 2020

Truck Detour in Ramsay

Late yesterday, in preparation for Green Line construction work on 11 ST SE near the intersection of 21 AV SE, our Roads staff determined that the on-street closure area that is required for construction would limit the ability for large truck traffic traveling eastbound on 21 AV SE to safely make a right-hand turn onto 11 ST SE southbound.  As such, in order to accommodate large truck traffic for the area businesses that rely on this route, we will be instituting a temporary truck detour route to accommodate large truck traffic. The detour route will redirect large truck traffic westbound along 23 AV SE southbound onto Spiller RD SE. The detour will only be for truck traffic that that typically travels eastbound on 21 AV SE to 11 ST SE and will not impact left or right-hand turn access from 11 ST SE onto 21 AV SE westbound. Please see the attached detour map for reference.

This temporary detour is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, June 17 at 6AM and be in place for a two week period. All affected area businesses that rely on large truck shipping and receiving have been notified by the Green Line team about this detour. Area businesses have expressed consideration of how a detour may impact area residents and have asked that the Ramsay Community Association be made aware of this detour.

UPDATE:  30 KM  speed limit reduction will be applicable to all vehicles using this route.

If you have any questions or concerns about this temporary detour or receive inquiries from community residents, you are welcome to share the above details and contact information for Stuart Gripton – Sr. Access Planner – City of Calgary – Green Line Stakeholder Relations (Email: Tel:403-312-2682) if they wish to reach out to him directly.
