Inglewood/Ramsay City Projects Update –

November 2020

See below for important updates on projects in the Inglewood and Ramsay communities.

9 Avenue S.E. Bridge Replacement – Project Update

Update to opening schedule

The scheduled opening of the 9 Avenue S.E. bridge has been adjusted from November to mid-2021, based on a delay in procuring required steel components for the bridge from our original supplier. A new supplier has been sourced, who is in the process of manufacturing these steel components, and delivery is expected to start in the coming weeks.

As this process takes place behind the scenes, work continues to advance on-site with the completion of the approach roadways to the bridge and preparing the site for the delivery of steel. Over the next several weeks, cranes will also be brought on-site to accommodate installation of the steel components over the winter.

As we work through the winter months, asphalt availability and weather conditions may also factor in on the ultimate opening date. We will communicate the new opening date of the bridge closer to completion.

Beltline & Inglewood Pools Program Update

As part of a collaborative process to determine the long-term future of the Inglewood Aquatic Centre, we began a process to understand how Calgarians who live, work, and play in the Beltline and Inglewood/Ramsay communities use social and recreational spaces. Public input took place in August 2020 through Community Engagement and through targeted Neighbourhood Inquiry Kits.

The reports for these activities have been completed and are posted on our Engage portal. A Progress Update on the program will be presented to the Standing Policy Committee on Community and Protective Services in late 2020.

With this information, we will proceed to the Design phase of the program and develop and test options for meeting local social and recreational needs and insights.

Ramsay Inclusive Playground – Project Update

Through a partnership with us, the Parks Foundation, Variety Alberta and the Ramsay Community Association, a brand-new inclusive playground is coming to Ramsay.

Construction on the playground is scheduled to begin in summer 2021, with an estimated completion by the end of 2021. The park will be located as showed in the photo below on the corner of Macdonald Ave. and Bellevue Ave. SE, Calgary, AB T2G 4M3. The final design concept features two play spaces with inclusively designed play equipment, ample seating and natural features.

Jack Long Park – Project Update

Construction is well underway to redevelop Jack Long Park into a new cultural hub for the community. Over the past few months, we have made significant progress, but we have also experienced some supply delays, in part due to COVID-19.

Four main components are left to be completed:

  • Pouring of custom concrete pathways with coloured glass
  • Installation of concrete pavers and stonework
  • Installation of site furnishings, including custom elements like concrete seat walls and a family-style harvest table.
  • Sodding over one third of the park.

New play structure

Construction has also started on a new play structure that will be completed soon; however, safety testing is required before we can allow children access.

Due to these supply delays, as well as safety and liability concerns of opening a park in an incomplete state, we are unable to open Jack Long Park in 2020. To ensure the safety of the public, the site security fence will remain in place until the re-opening. The park is anticipated to be completed by late spring 2021. See a photo below of what the park will look like when it opens to the public.

Inglewood Sanitary Trunk – Construction Update

Work at 8 Avenue S.E. and 9 Street. will be complete by late-November. This intersection will reopen at that time. Final landscaping is scheduled for spring 2021, when conditions are more favourable for grass growth.

Thank you to residents for their patience during construction of this important piece of Calgary’s water system.

Hydrant Repair work – Update

Starting in late November, we will be closing 9 Avenue S.E. at 8 Street to repair a leaking hydrant valve. This is expected to be complete in three days.

This work will begin following the reopening of the Inglewood Sanitary Trunk closure nearby at 8 Avenue S.E. and 9 Street to ensure residents have access to 9 Avenue S.E.

President’s Update – November 2020

November 26th, 2020

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 2 months since hauling chairs and blankets to the RCA outdoor AGM. If you didn’t have a chance to join, please find a draft copy of the meeting minutes below. It’s incredible to read the year in review and recognize the efforts of community volunteers. In that same spirit, on behalf of the RCA, I’d like to extend sincere gratitude to our past president, Vince Bodnar. I would not be entering this term with as much optimism had it not been for his leadership through a difficult year.

Last year, much of RCA’s traditional way of business was put to the test with the arrival of covid, shrinking revenues, aging facilities, volunteer turnover and changing demographics and social interests. While this resulted in some tough decisions, such as the release the Community Hall; fewer competing priorities will allow us to revisit our vision and move forward by design. As such, the new Board have been busy building out an annual plan, including some of the following overarching goals:

  • A Facility Improvement Plan for the Outdoor Rink and Shack
  • Increased Community Engagement
  • Updated External Communication Strategy
  • Long Term Financial Sustainability Planning
  • Revitalized Committees and Volunteer Opportunities

Despite changing health guidelines, Ramsay’s community spirit has not subsided. Here are just a few highlights in recent weeks: a successful Casino, a socially distanced Halloween Parade and festive displays throughout the neighbourhood, a new Board of Directors have settled in, a new Treasurer has stepped forward, a new Committee Chairs has been appointed for Communications, Rec volunteers acquired donated benches and an additional firepit to accommodate social distancing, our Adopt-a-Rink is ready, the undercover rink remains busy with biking on the ramps and many other heartwarming community-led initiatives.

If you’re interested in joining the conversation, please consider attending our monthly Virtual RCA General Meetings. They are held virtually on the first Tuesday of every month with the exception of January, July and August. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 1 @ 7pm via Google Meet. Click here find out how to join: http://ramsaycalgary.ca/event/rca-general-meeting-38/

If you are unable to attend, but have feedback or questions, feel free to email me: president@ramsaycalgary.ca
