Calgary Centre By-Election Debate

November 13th, 2012

Sunday, November 18, at 12:30pm at the Central Library’s Dutton Theatre.

Dear Citizens,

This email is specifically for residents of the Ward 9 communities of Ramsay, Erlton, Parkhill-Stanley Park, and Rideau Park-Roxboro. These fabulous neighbourhoods are also part of the much larger Calgary Centre enumeration district of the Federal Government. Within Calgary Centre there is currently a by-election underway for the recently vacated seat of long-time MP Lee Richardson. Election day is Monday, November 26, 2012 – less than two short weeks away. The purpose of this email is to invite you to a special debate between the candidates running for MP in Calgary Centre – a debate that our Mayor has invited these candidates to – in order to specifically discuss a Cities Matter agenda.

As Mayor Naheed Nenshi and your current City Council advocated during the recent Provincial Election, strong, healthy cities – and specifically a strong and healthy Calgary – requires thoughtful vision and action from all levels of government. Our advocacy during the Provincial Election has lead to Calgary and the Province signing a Memorandum of Understanding to begin discussions to develop a new Calgary Charter. A Calgary Charter will give our City a new relationship with our Provincial Government and ensure that we have the tools, resources, and capacity to do the work that Calgarians need us to undertake.

This by-election offers a great opportunity to begin a similar discussion at the Federal level and send a Calgarian to Ottawa who understands that the Government of Canada has a major role to play in addressing issues that affect our City every day: our challenges supporting front line services; our need to eliminate homelessness and poverty; fixing the fiscal imbalance; and, creating a sustainable transportation strategy are just a few critical issues that we need our Calgary Centre Member of Parliament to be able to advocate for.

Please come out and participate in this important debate and share this broadly with your neighbours. The debate will be held on Sunday, November 18, at 2:00pm at the Central Library’s Dutton Theatre. This debate is being hosted by the Calgary Public Library. This debate is being organized by Citizen and Civic Camper, DJ Kelly as a non-partisan forum. This debate is endorsed by the Ramsay, Erlton, Parkhill-Stanley Park, and Rideau Park-Roxboro Community Associations (if you’d like to volunteer as a host please contact your CA or DJ Kelly). This debate is being moderated by the CBC. This debate will be organized in two sections, the first will consist of pre-arranged Cities Matters questions that the candidates will be given the opportunity to prepare for, and the second section will be an open forum on any federal-related topic solicited from the audience.

Please come and please bring your neighbours. See you this Sunday.

2nd Annual Hoe Down for Ward 9 on Wednesday July 4

June 28th, 2012

Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra sends the following invitation to next week’s Hoe Down for Ward 9:

Dear Neighbour,

In my efforts to be a different kind of politician, I’m trying to approach fundraising in a different way.

I’m leery of the ubiquity of $150 events that are attended solely by the development industry. The Ward 9 Hoe Down is my attempt to create an event that everyone can afford to come to, and that is such value for money (and so fun) that everyone wants to come.

I’d be honored if you came to the 2nd Annual Ward 9 Hoe Down with your family, neighbours, friends, and colleagues to celebrate the amazing community we’re so lucky to share.

A great meal, a great concert by T. Buckley, and a ton of fun all for $35 (it’s an Inglewood Party so bring your kids for free).

Order online at eventelephant.com/ward9hoedown or email Lauren at events@carra4ward9.ca

Thanks for your support and see you next Wednesday!
